Freshman Admission Notice Gift Box

The Design Name, "2019 Admissions Welcome Package DGUT," refers to the freshman admission notice gift box designed by Ruikang Xie. The inspiration for this design came from the desire to create a unique and memorable experience for new students joining Dongguan University of Technology. The gift box features the red Lingnan lychee as the core pattern, with each lychee representing a smiling face welcoming students to Dongguan. The use of the lychee is symbolic, as its pronunciation in Chinese, "Lizhi," encourages young people to be patriotic, inspirational, truth-pursuing, practical, and to unite and revitalize China.

What sets this design apart is its visual concept, which follows the natural growth law. The gift box represents the fruiting stage, with the previous two years focusing on sowing and flowering. The choice of the lychee fruit, a specialty of Dongguan, Guangdong, China, as the core pattern adds a unique touch to the design.

The realization of this design involves the use of the lychee fruit pattern as decoration, with a die-cut hollow out lychee pattern on the lateral side of the box opening. The wooden postcard included in the gift box is engraved with an inspirational pattern using laser technology. This postcard can be taken down, folded into a three-dimensional lychee pattern, and used as a pendant.

The gift box serves as a departure gift for new students and contains letters and gifts. It also includes a one-shouldered canvas bag that features an atlas of the red revolutionary tourism attractions in Dongguan. Students can explore these attractions using the provided introductions and routes. Additionally, the gift box contains badges, stickers, postcards, and vehicle passes.

The design project started in July 2019 and was completed in September in Dongguan, China. Extensive research was conducted to ensure that the design incorporated humanistic care and provided a systematic and consistent experience. The inclusion of a Patriotic Inspirational Map, featuring pictures, texts, QR code positioning, and map tagging, allows for a readable, visible, and accessible presentation of the representative red revolution bases in Dongguan.

The design team faced challenges in finding a visual concept that would continue the vision of the previous two years while also reflecting the upcoming 70th anniversary of National Day in China. The goal was to maintain a youthful vitality and humanistic thought throughout the design.

The gift box of the admission letter for the 2019 new students of Dongguan University of Technology embodies the natural growth process, from sowing and flowering to fruiting. The choice of the red smiling lychee in Lingnan represents the passion of Dongguan and exudes the youthful vitality of young fighters in the new era.

This design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2021. The award recognizes outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that authenticate experience and resourcefulness. It acknowledges the incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
